‘How religion killed my sister, she rejected IVF, surrogacy’

A Nigerian lady identified as Progress Otuk has taken to Facebook to narrate a sad incident on how her sister was ‘killed’ by religion as she refused to try out surrogacy, IVF and other alternative birth methods as she waited on the Lord.

In her narration, the lady wrote that the husband eventually had a mistress who bore him two kids and this led to the death of her sister.

She wrote:

Still on surrogacy;

The truth is, Abraham and Sarah happened forever ago; when humans lived past 150years. The likelihood of conception in a woman who is past 50years is slim. Miracles happen and i believe. But the miracle of birthing a child at 75 is just that, a miracle. It does NOT happen to one thousand other women. So Christians MUST think and accept healthy means to have children beyond “waiting on the Lord”.

My sister was married as a virgin at 21, but she couldn’t conceive. My mother introduced IVF to her when it was not common and begged for her to try. She refused. Her husband was a senior employee with SHELL. NIG. He could afford ANY procedure, but my sister refused and insisted on “waiting for the Lord”.

My mother even suggested surrogacy which is a common practice in our culture, she refused.

20 years into marriage, she was told that her husband had had a love child with a younger girl in Port Harcourt, a claim she refuted. But eventually the truth was unravelled before her eyes.

Her husband brought his “mistress” with TWO children home.

She went to adopt a baby boy, but it was too late. She was replaced in her home.

My sister did not survive what she thought was a “betrayal”. But i didn’t think same.

Her demise was painful, but i still can’t bring myself to blame her husband. Because it turned out that he had asked for these options as well, but she refused.

If you are going to “wait on the Lord for the fruit of the womb” make sure your partner is in agreement, otherwise, you will be on a baseless adventure.

Couples should discuss these issues.

IVF and Surrogacy are valid instruments of having children.

Do NOT cower to religious manipulations.

PS: don’t bring your religious grandstanding here. I don’t have time for nonsense.
